Greek (Ancient)

The place of Ancient Greek in history is significant, with 34 centuries of written records illustrating its pivotal role in the fields of philosophy, literature and religion. Ancient Greek refers to the form used in the ancient world from around the 9th century BC. By 300BC this developed into Koine Greek (meaning "Common"), which was used as a lingua franca until around 300AD and was the language in which the New Testament was written. Also known as "Biblical", "New Testament" or "Ecclesiastical" Greek, it is still used as the liturgical language of the Greek Orthodox Church, although it is not understood by Modern Greek speakers.
