Persian

Persian is an official language in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan where it is known as Farsi, Dari and Tajiki respectively. Persian has a rich cultural history evident in body of literature which includes poetry and epic works. Persian has had an important influence on many neighbouring languages, especially Urdu although influences on Persian are subject to formal monitoring. Persian is written with the Arabic script. The largest number of Persian speakers in Australia was born in Iran. Most Persian speakers arrived in Australia during the 1980s and 1990s due to religious and political persecution. Persian is taught in a number of community language schools and in one Australian university.
