Pidgins (Melanesian)

Melanesian Pidgins refer to three related English-based pidgins spoken in Melanesia: Tok Pisin (Papua New Guinea), Pijin (Solomon Islands) and Bislama (Vanuatu). They are used as lingua francas in otherwise linguistically diverse nations. Tok Pisin and Bislama have official status in their respective countries, although English is the only official language of the Solomon Islands. Pacific languages have not traditionally been taught in Australian schools or at university, although their diversity makes them of particular interest to linguists. Currently, only one Australian university offers studies in Melanesian Pidgins.
