Russian

Russian is the most widely-spoken Slavic language and is closely related to Ukrainian. It is an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and is an unofficial but widely-used language in countries which were formerly part of the Soviet Union. It uses a Cyrillic alphabet which has undergone many revisions over the last millennium. The use of Russian in literature, philosophy and in scientific research and development, cements the role of Russian an important world language. Russian speakers in Australia are predominantly Russian-born, though many were also born in Ukraine and smaller numbers in former Soviet-ruled countries. Russian is widely taught at university level in Australia, and is taught in a small number of community language schools.
