Sanskrit

Sanskrit is one of the oldest attested Indo-European languages. With Vedic (pre-classical) Sanskrit texts dating back to between 1500-1200 BC,Sanskrit vocabulary and grammar has had a significant influence on the development of modern Indo-Aryan languages, as well as languages from other language families with which it came into contact as a result of its significance within the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Sanskrit is used widely as a ceremonial, symbolic and liturgical language in India, where it is an official language. Written Sanskrit uses the Devanāgarī script. There have been attempts to revive the use of Sanskrit as a spoken language.
