Syriac

Syriac is an eastern dialect of Aramaic which was spoken between the 1st and 14th centuries AD, when it began to be replaced by Arabic. It is a member of the Northwest branch of the Semitic family. It is still used by members of certain Christian communities in Syria and in southern India as a liturgical language. Syriac has been written with a number of different alphabets, with the classical version being a rounded form.
