Welsh (Middle)

Modern Welsh is an official language in Wales (along with English), but is only spoken fluently by a minority. Welsh is a Celtic language, having first developed in the 6th century from Common Brittonic, out of which Breton, Cornish and the now extinct Cumbric also developed. Middle Welsh refers to the variety in use between the 12th and 14th centuries and is the language in which the Mabinogion – the earliest prose literature of Britain – was written.
